But the color of a character's lightsaber is at the core of what we will be talking about today. That being the question of if the Jedi Guardian, Jedi Consular and Jedi Sentinel classes will be making a return in SW:TOR. For those not in the know, these Jedi ranks emerged from the two KOTOR games and have found their way into SW cannon via role-playing game books and the comics. Let me provide a quick breakdown before we move on. Jedi Guardians focus on combat and are the flip side of the already seen Sith Warrior. For gamers looking to kick butt and leave a trail of fallen foes behind Jedi Guardians would be the way to go. Jedi Guardians also boast more iconic SW characters among their ranks than any other Jedi class. A short list would include Bao-Dur, Kyle Katarn, Aayala Secura, Plo Koon, Mace Windu, Jacen and Jaina Solo, Mara Jade, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin, Luke and Ben Skywalker.
Traditionally, Jedi Guardians use blue lightsabers. Jedi Consulars are more cerebral Jedi who focus on diplomacy, knowledge and the ways of the Force. While they spent less time practicing with their lightsabers than Jedi Guardians did, Jedi Consulars brought addition skill and power with the Force into battle making them foes to be reckoned with on the battlefield. For gamers who want to wield the Force the Jedi Consular would be the perfect choice. Known Jedi Consulars also boost some impressive names in their ranks such as Kit Fisto, Jocasta Nu, Leia Organa Solo, Nomi Sunrider, Shaak Ti and Yoda. Jedi Consulars traditionally use green lightsabers.
According to SW cannon the Jedi Sentinels seem to vanish from the ranks of the Jedi by the time of the prequels. Why is unclear, though a Jedi splinter ground known as the Grey Paladins seemed to carry on their spirit and even took things a step further by using blasters instead of lightsabers as their weapon of choice. Jedi Sentinels often used yellow lightsabers. I should also mention that Jedi of these classes were under no obligation to wield lightsabers with the color of there class. Mace Windu had his violet lightsaber and Luke and likely (but not confirmed) Jedi Guardian Ahsoka Tano used green lightsabers.
So now that we're all on the same page, what are the chances these classes will turn up in SW:TOR? I'd say that since the KOTOR games were made by BioWare and that the terms are now cannon according to The New Essential Chronology that the odds are pretty good. It certainly would be a great way to have Jedi (and maybe even Sith) characters come out the door being very different. Or these classes could be some sort of specialization characters could take at a certain level. Not unlike a Prestige Class in Dungeons & Dragons and other table-top RPGs. And before you laugh at that idea remember that BioWare are the ones behind the Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate franchises. Given what we've of the game customization is going to be big part of SW:TOR so I can't imagine that BioWare is going to let such fun an interesting ideas as these classes gather dust. Bringing these classes as options to players would make the game more fun and add a lot to the replay value. So let me ask you a question now. Welcome back to another edition of The Blog Unleashed. Don't let the title fool you. We're not going to be talking about if you'll be able to change the color of any lightsaber-using characters you might play. We've seen that in so many SW games in the past I think it's safe to assume that the amazing technicolor lightsabers shall return.
Finally there is the Jedi Sentinel who strikes a balance between the Guardian and Consular and who also bring deeper training in fields most Jedi might be only somewhat skilled in such as security, computers, stealth techniques, demolitions, repair or medicine. Players looking for a somewhat non-traditional or jack-of-all trades kind of character would be a good fit to the Jedi Sentinel. The Old Republic was a great time for Jedi Sentinels as they counted Attom Rand, Mira, Visas Marr and Bastila Shan among their number.
